GMA Pallet (48" x 40")
The GMA (Grocery Manufacturers Association) pallet is the most common pallet size in North America. It's designed to fit efficiently in standard truck trailers and warehouse racking systems.
This pallet size allows two pallets to sit side by side in a standard 53' trailer with minimal wasted space, making it ideal for shipping and logistics efficiency.
Pallet Components
Deck Boards
The top and bottom horizontal boards that support the load. Top deck typically has 5-7 boards.
Stringers
The parallel boards running lengthwise that support deck boards. Standard pallets have 3 stringers.
Blocks
Square or rectangular pieces that support the deck in block pallets. Usually 9 blocks per pallet.
Lead Board
The first and last deck boards at each end. Critical for forklift entry.
Notches
Cut-outs in stringers that allow 4-way forklift entry on stringer pallets.
Pallet Entry Types
2-Way Entry
Forklift can only enter from two sides (front and back). Common in stringer pallets.
4-Way Entry
Forklift can enter from all four sides. Common in block pallets or notched stringers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently asked questions about pallet sizing, weight capacity, and choosing the right footprint.
What is the most common pallet size?
The 48x40 GMA pallet is the most common in North America and fits many warehouse racking systems.
How do I choose the right pallet size?
Match pallet size to your product dimensions, handling equipment, and storage footprint while allowing for safe overhang.
Do you support metric sizes?
Yes. We can supply or build metric and international sizes when needed for global supply chains.
Can you provide a sizing chart?
Yes. Our size guide includes common footprints and recommendations for typical applications.
How does pallet size affect freight?
Proper sizing maximizes trailer space and reduces damage; oversized loads can increase freight costs or handling risks.
What size works best for automation?
Uniform 48x40 pallets with consistent deck boards are often best for conveyors and automated storage systems.
Do you stock half or quarter pallets?
We can provide smaller footprints for retail displays or tight storage spaces as needed.
Can custom sizes be produced quickly?
Lead time depends on materials and complexity, but we prioritize fast turnaround for common custom footprints.
How does weight capacity vary by size?
Load capacity depends on design, lumber thickness, and deck configuration, not just footprint, so we match specs to your loads.
Can I mix sizes in one warehouse?
Yes, but plan storage zones and handling equipment accordingly to keep operations safe and efficient.
